A letter of welcome from the Mayor of Holsworthy
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to the ancient market town of Holsworthy, situated amidst the rolling green hills of North Devon. There are many natural attractions within a short distance, the rugged cliffs of the Hartland Peninsula, sandy beaches at Bude and nearby Widemouth Bay, the South West Coastal Path, fishing and boating on the Tamar and Roadford Lakes. Holsworthy is an ideal central base for visiting the main attractions of Devon and Cornwall and for discovering Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor, and will become one of the hubs for the Ruby Trail development, offering a network of rural walks, cycle paths and bridleways connecting to the famous Tarka Trail and Dartmoor".
Holsworthy offers many attractions, pastimes and recreational activities are well catered for. There is a heated swimming pool, sports hall, splendid park with a bowling green, cricket club and tennis court. Come along to Holsworthy football ground and cheer our local team along! Just outside Holsworthy is an 18-hole golf course, at the nearby Tamar and Roadford Lakes there is fishing and sailing. There are several other fisheries in the area, horse riding and archery are but some of the other interests that you can take part in. Reflect on times past in the newly fascinating Holsworthy Museum. For the energetic there is cycling along quiet country lanes, and the developing Tamar Trail cycleway, savour the true atmosphere of rural Devon. There are, of course, some great country walks in the area. Take time to visit the town's five hostelries, enjoy the good food and drink, participate in traditional pub games like pool, darts and skittles and explore our streets, traditional shops, cafes and market square.
Throughout the year we have a busy programme of events to entertain you. The season really gets underway with the Agricultural Show usually in early May, see fine westcountry livestock, horses and top class show jumpers. Accompanied by floral displays of great merit, competitions run by local organisations, produce from the Women's Institute, the craft tent, local business exhibitors, refreshment and entertainment marquees and the big brass sound of the Holsworthy Town Band. Towards the end of June the show field is the venue for the hugely successful Vintage and Vehicle Rally. This is closely followed by annual fair week in early July, see the unique "Pretty Maid" ceremony, with Courtleet and the Portreeve and his officers led by the Town Crier to the annual ale tasting, enjoy all the fun of the fair in the Manor Car Park. Throughout the year fetes, bazaars, auctions, majorette competitions and productions from our own theatre group, all contribute to the rich tapestry which is 'life' in rural Holsworthy, including our Winter Carnival and traditional Christmas festivities.
Find out about accommodation in the area from the new "Holsworthy Visitor Information Centre" situated between the Manor Car Park and the Market Square. Don't forget to visit the shops, something for everybody with friendly service. The Pannier Market is held every Wednesday in the square, there is also a thriving cattle market.
Whatever your interests you will find something for you in this unspoilt corner of England. Enjoy your visit, and like many before you, come back and see us soon.
Yours sincerely
Richard Brown
